Man sleeps on the tube listening to Chopin

This might be the birth of a new idea, I really got into this sketch. The guy in question had no idea. It's essentially a fast warm up sketch. You can imagine it with colour, a bit more going on around him.

I've been listening to a lot of Chopin lately, I think it's starting to influence my work. I feel like it gives me a rhythm to work to when I'm trying to sketch quickly.

BIFA, Ex-Machina Illustrations

While travelling India I received an email asking me if I could attend an illustrators evening for the British Independent Film Awards. I had been posting a lot of my work on Instagram, which for the last few months has been pretty sci-fi heavy so it was great when they offered me a brief based on the amazing film "Ex-Machina".

I'm a massive fan of the film, the themes resonate heavily, particularly the moral questions posed. No spoilers though, if you haven't seen it you should definitely go and watch it, quick!

Specifically my brief was based on a quote from the film:

Isn't it strange to create something that hates you

Here are some of my concept sketches prior to illustrating the final piece live on the evening. You can see the finished piece here.

Inky androids & cyborgs

Andoid, definition:

(in science fiction) a robot with a human appearance.

Cyborg, definition:

A fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.

Clearly these are a little less "normal" human...

This was a sketchbook piece I worked on during my trip to India when I wasn't up to my eye balls in trains and fun people! I did have a couple of chilled art days where I worked on some things but this guy stood out as a strong character. Definitely interested in developing him some more.

Redhead

Another bearded type, different angle, watercolour and ink.

Smoking blue beard

Illustrated with ink, coloured with water colour. This also counts as a bit of a tube tale. With the water colour tube tales I do the colour first and then ink on top.

I find the whole process deeply cathartic. It's great stress relief, acting as a form of meditation in my eyes. You end up in a kind of flow state trying to avoid being jolted and jogged and then you suddenly forget anyone is even there or that you are moving.

Would robots trip

I started with these characters and these themes as I was not only reading a lot of J G Ballard and Phillip K Dick, but also suddenly all of these dystopian TV shows like Westworld and Black Mirror started messing with my head.

There are themes I don't want to discuss just yet as I am planning on doing a lot more with some of the ideas on show here. Suffice to say the next stage of human evolution is an interesting concept, even if it probably doesn't involve us humans.

Ask yourself this, what path would sentient AI follow?

A trip to the sea

Actually a progression of some of my earlier organic forms, I started with a sea horse and went on from there. This is just water colour and ink.

I actually see it as some sort of psychedelic coral where the forms and patterns take on new meanings. Definitely something I enjoy exploring both in the sketchbook and in real life.

Tube Tales 1

This is a couple of years ago when I started doing #tubetales as part of what I claim is a little instagram idea I had. What Tube tales actually is, is a need to make something of my agonising commute in the mornings and evenings. That is when I'm not peeling my eyelids apart with grains of will power.

Graphite Doll

A Sketch I did a while back when planning out larger graphite pieces Including "Brother needs a bigger net" and "Height of Sophistication".
