It’s Inktober 2019 and this year I have decided to take part. Last year I gave it a go for all of 3 days then gave up. It’s a big commitment and a challenge for any artist or illustrator, whether you’re full-time or part-time.
My problem last year was a serious lack of time and energy, this year I’m firing on all cylinders. I wanted to push myself to draw in ink every day in October and take risks, testing different styles, homages and subject matter.
I decided to start off with some Joker movie fan art in different styles. The first was an experiment with brush pens with a slight nod to the great French comic book artist, Moebius. The second is a noir, black and white version of the Joaquim Pheonix Joker. The third is a bit of an action drawing, a more chaotic Joker going crazy after blowing up a highway. I then created another Joker portrait in red and black.
After that, I hit the prompt list. Build made me think of nests so I drew some freaky birds in my sketchbook before returning to Joker the day after with an homage to Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira sat on a throne drawing (the cover of Akira book 4).
I’m working with brush pens and fine-liners in my sketchbook and on some nice heavy-weight drawing papers.
I’ve included the first 6 days below but you can follow my progress every day on Instagram including some cool time-lapses.
