I’m back, welcome to the first artist diary.
It’s been about a year since my last blog entry. Its not that I haven’t been creating or coming up with ideas, I have still been busy with drawings and commissions but all the admin stuff and my writing ground to a halt. I was actually pretty shocked when I realised it had been a year without doing anything on here.
I have been thinking a lot about what I could write about. An idea I have been interested in developing for a while is to start keeping an artist diary online. Ideally I want to try and do this bi-weekly, alongside other bits and bobs about artists I like, exhibitions, events, work etc.
It is part journal, part window into thought processes and creativity, part advice giving, part brain dump.
You're reading the first one now.
Another content related idea I’ve been batting around for a little while is to start a podcast. I listen to The Blind Boy podcast (in fact I’m listening to him as I write, big thanks to Gavin for recommending him) and it has really inspired me to start recording one. Recently I feel like I have become one of those people who talks about doing lots of things and then doesn’t deliver. That’s never really been me, I generally follow through on promises I make to myself. I’m committing, I’m putting it in writing, I WILL START A PODCAST. Please let me know if you’ll listen to it, tweet me @Jonnyrebel_uk. The podcast will be about creativity, the process and various streams of consciousness. I want to answer questions too so feel free to email me JL@JonathanLawrenceArt.com. I think I will call it ‘Wannabe Artists Diary’, or something like that. Or ‘The Almost Artist’, that sounds quite good actually.
I have also started researching artist residencies. I am still a little in the dark about exactly what to do about this but the thought of spending some time in a far off land doing nothing but create art sounds perfect to me. I will share what I find on here and on social media. It's one rabbit hole after another at the moment, which usually means you have to just try it yourself.
I invite people to get in touch with me with blogs or information about artist placements.
My goal with all the above, the blog, the podcast and the research, is to share as much as possible with my followers. I've already been lucky enough to have some great jobs and had a couple of small exhibitions but my ambition is to create better art, learn new skills, experience as many cultures as I can so I can live for what I do and share it with people.
As time goes on I hope my writing will improve because I will commit to doing all the things I say I will do and achieve something fulfilling that I can share with people. That means keeping this fucking blog up-to-date, no matter what.
